Abstract

For many IT startups and small businesses today, standing out in a crowded market means doing two things well—going digital and staying sustainable. This study explores how startups and SMEs in Tamil Nadu are combining digital tools like AI and cloud computing with environmentally conscious efforts, such as energy-saving technologies and green IT practices, to boost their global competitiveness.Based on insights from 180 companies, the research addressed 3 hypotheses using statistical techniques like correlation, ANOVA, and regression. The first explores if there is any meaningful connection between a firm’s digital transformation initiatives and its sustainability practices; the second examines the role of barriers in its adoption; the third attempts to test if the combined adoption leads to increased efficiency, cost savings and competitiveness. After doing a rigorous statistical testing, all the 3 null hypotheses were rejected. The findings show that firms with higher digital readiness also tend to score better on sustainability. However, challenges remain, especially when it comes to tracking ROI, hiring skilled talent, and navigating regulations. These issues can slow down progress, particularly for companies still early in their digital journey. The study confirms that Digital & Sustainability Integration is a proven strategy for increasing efficiency and reducing costs. One of the key contributions of this study is a new combined metric called “Digital-Sustainability Adoption Score (DSAS)” that proves to be a stronger predictor of success than looking at digital or sustainability factors alone. While DSAS improves competitiveness, additional factors like market entry strategy, branding, and industry regulations must also be considered.

Overall, the study highlights the growing importance of integrating digital transformation with sustainability, not just for better performance but also to support larger goals like SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). It also suggests ways that companies and policymakers can work together to create an ecosystem that supports smarter, greener growth.
