Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the causes and methods of suicide that were reported in Iraq in 2022 and 2023. In 2022, 511 cases were reported, and in 2023, 352 cases. In both years, hanging was the most popular method, followed by burning and using a firearm; drug overdose and drowning were less frequent. In terms of the causes, psychological issues were the most common in 2022, while family issues took the lead in 2023, with social and economic issues being mentioned less frequently. The results demonstrate that suicide is still a significant public health issue that is impacted by both social and personal factors. The most popular techniques are hanging and burning, and the primary causes are psychological and familial problems. These findings highlight the critical need for all-encompassing preventative measures, such as family counseling, mental health services, public awareness campaigns, and restrictions on access to deadly weapons.
