Abstract

This study examines cultural communication strategies for Shikumen architecture, focusing on cultural retention and evolving communication patterns. Using literature review and surveys, it explores whether Shikumen’s spatial layout and design elements convey historical, social, and lifestyle meanings, how its symbolic communication varies across media and audiences, and how to develop effective strategies. Findings indicate that Shikumen, as a blend of Chinese and Western cultures, reflects social class identities through its spatial and decorative features. For many Shanghainese, it carries strong nostalgic value. Beyond sensory appeal, Shikumen scenes evoke deep emotional experiences, aiding research on cultural transmission in physical spaces and the impact of architectural forms on urban community behavior and cohesion.
