An Ecosystem Approach to Strengthening the Bamboo Value Chain

Abstract

The bamboo sector plays a significant role in promoting sustainable livelihoods, environmental conservation, and green economic development. Despite India's vast bamboo resources, the sector continues to face several challenges, including fragmented value chains, inadequate processing technologies, weak institutional support, limited access to finance, and poor market linkages. This paper examines the bamboo value chain through an ecosystem approach that integrates resource management, enterprise development, institutional support, financial mechanisms, and market connectivity. The study is based on an extensive review of secondary literature from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (INBAR), National Bamboo Mission (NBM), Forest Survey of India (FSI), and other peer-reviewed publications. A systems-thinking framework and value chain mapping approach were employed to identify key stakeholders, their interactions, existing constraints, and opportunities for sustainable development. The findings indicate that strengthening collaboration among growers, processors, enterprises, financial institutions, research organizations, policymakers, and markets can substantially enhance value addition, improve livelihoods, and increase sector competitiveness. The proposed five-pillar ecosystem framework emphasizes sustainable resource management, enterprise promotion, institutional coordination, financial inclusion, and market development as essential drivers of a resilient bamboo economy. Adoption of this integrated approach can support circular bioeconomy principles, promote climate resilience, contribute to ecological restoration, and accelerate progress toward multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The study provides a comprehensive framework for policymakers, researchers, development agencies, and industry stakeholders seeking to strengthen sustainable bamboo value chains.
