Abstract

Biomimicry has emerged as a transformative framework for advancing sustainable and climate-resilient architecture, particularly in hot and dry regions where extreme environmental pressures demand adaptive and resource-efficient design approaches. By emulating the thermoregulatory, hydrological, and morphological strategies of desert organisms, biomimicry provides practical insights for improving thermal comfort, reducing energy use, and enhancing water management in the built environment. Recent advancements in adaptive façades, bio-derived materials, and computational design have expanded the scope of biomimetic innovation, enabling more responsive and performance-oriented architectural systems. However, challenges such as high initial costs, limited interdisciplinary collaboration, contextual mismatches, and insufficient life-cycle evaluation continue to constrain widespread adoption. Integrating vernacular intelligence, ecosystem-level thinking, and emerging AI-driven design tools presents promising pathways for bridging these gaps. This article synthesizes current trends in biomimicry and outlines key opportunities for climate-change adaptation while proposing targeted directions for future research. These recommendations emphasize the need for localized biomimetic frameworks, improved translation methodologies, and the development of accessible, low-carbon materials to support scalable and context-resilient implementation. By leveraging nature’s adaptive intelligence, biomimicry provides a forward-looking paradigm that guides architecture toward ecological regeneration and long-term sustainability.
