In arid regions, groundwater is the main water resource but faces pressure from increasing demand, which affects its quality and itssustainability. This study compared the hydrochemical characteristics of the Sidi Bel Abbès and Tenira plains in Algeria. The Sidi Bel Abbès groundwater is dominated by sodium, chloride or sodium, sulfate facies, while Tenira shows calcium, magnesium chloride facies. Irrigation assessment indicated a high salinity risk in both plains, with Sidi Bel Abbès having a poorer quality. The base exchange indices revealed preferential calcium release, and Sidi Bel Abbès showed higher mineralization (EC and TDS). Most Tenira waters met the JORA drinking standards, whereas Sidi Bel Abbès waters generally exceeded them. Both aquifers had good bacteriological qualitiesty.
