Abstract

This empirical investigation, conducted under the collaborative framework of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) and Dr. C.V. Raman University, Khandwa (M.P.), examines the transformative role of decentralized solar energy systems in advancing human development in rural Madhya Pradesh. Focusing on twenty villages within the Khandwa district, the study employs a mixed-methods design integrating quantitative data from 300 rural households with qualitative insights from focus group discussions and key stakeholder interviews. The research specifically investigates how solar energy access influences two critical dimensions of development—education and health—particularly among marginalized tribal and remote communities. Findings reveal that solar-powered electricity enhances educational outcomes by enabling extended study hours, digital learning, and reliable power for schools. Simultaneously, access to solar energy has improved healthcare delivery through continuous electricity for rural health centers, vaccine storage, and medical equipment, while also reducing indoor air pollution linked to traditional fuels.Despite these benefits, challenges such as high maintenance costs, limited technical awareness, and policy implementation gaps constrain the full potential of solar initiatives. The study offers evidence-based policy recommendations to strengthen India’s renewable energy framework and integrate solar access into rural development planning. Overall, it highlights solar energy as a catalyst for sustainable growth, educational advancement, and health equity in rural India.
